Wilson Set to Celebrate 30th Anniversary of Million Man March, Revive Unifest

August 27, 2025

Reverend Willie F. Wilson, pastor emeritus of Union Temple Baptist Church in Washington D.C., is organizing two significant events in October 2024: a 30th anniversary celebration of the historic 1995 Million Man March and the revival of Unifest, a Black cultural festival. The Million Man March, which brought hundreds of thousands of African American men to the National Mall on October 16, 1995, was led by Minister Louis Farrakhan and supported by local leaders including Marion and Cora Masters Barry.

Who is affected

  • African American communities, particularly in Ward 8 and across the D.C. metropolitan area
  • Black youth who will participate in essay contests and speaking opportunities
  • Local businesses in Anacostia that will benefit from increased patronage
  • Community activists and leaders continuing the legacy of the Million Man March
  • Black men who attended the original march and those who will participate in the 30th anniversary

What action is being taken

  • Reverend Wilson is organizing a 30th anniversary celebration of the Million Man March
  • Wilson is working to revive Unifest, planning for October 18 as a precursor to bringing the event back fully in June 2026
  • Organizers are collaborating with stakeholders in Baltimore, Annapolis, Prince George's County and D.C.
  • Youth-oriented activities including an essay contest are being planned for the celebration
  • Similar commemorative events are being organized throughout the country and world

Why it matters

  • The Million Man March created "a spirit of unity" and hope that organizers want to revive
  • According to Dr. Benjamin Chavis, the original march led to decreased Black-on-Black crime, lower high school dropout rates, and increased voter registration
  • The events will highlight and support Black businesses in Anacostia
  • These celebrations provide an opportunity to educate young people about the historical significance of the Million Man March
  • The events aim to bring the Black community together during what organizers describe as a "critical time" for unity

What's next

  • The 30th anniversary celebration of the Million Man March will take place in October in Ward 8
  • Unifest is planned to return on October 18 as a precursor to bringing the full event back in June 2026
  • Organizers will honor late Black women leaders who supported the original march
  • Dr. Benjamin Chavis will participate in a related event with a Local Organizing Committee in Baltimore on October 16
  • The events will feature youth speakers, parent speakers, and activities to engage younger generations
